AO Trauma Research Olympiad 2025

AO Trauma is pleased to announce the launch of the third edition of the AO Trauma Research Olympiad.
This esteemed competition will be held in December 2025 in Davos, Switzerland.
Each AO Trauma region will select two candidates who will be invited to Davos to present their research projects as part of the competition.

Requirements


FOR CANDIDATES
Must be 40 years of age or younger and be clinicians.
Must be an active AO Trauma member.
Must be fluent in English.
Must not have any other commitments during the days of the AO Trauma Research Olympiad program.


FOR STUDIES
Must be written in English and must be complete (structured abstracts are not accepted!) and related to musculoskeletal trauma.
Must be original, i.e. not published, submitted for publication or presented in the last 6 months at the time of application.
Must be basic or clinical science, but cannot be case reports, narrative or systematic reviews and expert opinions.
Must not have been submitted to previous editions of the AO Trauma Research Olympiad or the AO Trauma Latin America Research Challenge.
Must have prior approval from a Research Ethics Committee (with proven documentation of the Committee name and approval number).
Must be submitted on time and according to the established criteria.


Selection process

1. REVIEW AND SCORING
Each paper will undergo evaluation by three experts from Latin America, who will score the submissions based on established criteria.
2. PRE-SELECTION
The highest-scoring papers will be pre-selected for online oral presentations to a regional jury composed of members from the AO Trauma Latin America Research Support Group.
3. FINAL DECISION
The judges will make the final selection based on a comprehensive evaluation of both the written paper and the online presentation.



Presentation of papers

1. ONLINE PRESENTATION
Pre-selected candidates must attend a synchronous online meeting, date and time to be announced, to present their studies to the regional judges. Candidates who fail to attend this session will be automatically disqualified from the competition.
2. FINAL PRESENTATION IN DAVOS
The top two candidates will present their research projects in Davos before five judges, one representing each AO Trauma region. Jury members will be selected by the AO Trauma Research Commission.
3. TEMPLATE
Presentations must follow the templates provided for each stage (online and final presentations).


Papers awards

The two selected candidates from each region will attend the in-person event in Davos, Switzerland, with flights and four nights' accommodations covered by AO Trauma.

As part of the program, candidates will have the opportunity to:
  • Visit the AO Research Institute Davos (ARI) facilities and meet with ARI researchers and AO Innovation Translation Center (AO ITC) staff.
  • Tour the AO Davos Courses.
  • Enjoy dinner with invited guests.
  • Attend the AO Trauma Research Olympiad competition.
  • Participate in other special activities to be announced later.
