The AO Spine International Board is pleased to announce the results from the Chairperson election earlier this year and congratulates Asdrubal Falavigna on being elected as the next AO Spine International Board Chairperson. From the COVID-19 frontline: Asdrubal Falavigna
|

May 2020 was to be month when Rio de Janeiro welcomed the international spine community to the Global Spine Congress. It was to be the busiest week of the year for the organizers, several years' work coming together. It turned out to be a very different story indeed for healthcare workers around the world instead.
As for so many AO Spine surgeons, also Asdrubal Falavigna's calendar started filling up with projects seeking to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 disease. Falavigna, who is starting his chairperson-elect term this summer, shares his experiences of projects related to COVID-19 diagnosis, telemedicine, and provision of supplies and resources in the Caxias do Sul region in southern Brazil.

AO Spine study to assess impact of COVID-19
|
|
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the lives of people worldwide. Early results from an AO Spine study addressing the impact of the virus on spine surgeons show geographic variations but also highlight similarities around the globe. The study predicts changes in clinical practice and establishment of Telemedicine. Almost 100% of the community are calling for formal guidelines to guide future public health concerns. Follow-up studies at different time points of virus severity will address the virus' long-term effects.

To that end, we have begun curating the “best” spine articles that are published out of the Global Spine Journal, Spine, European Spine Journal, and Journal of Neurosurgery Spine on a quarterly basis.

Each quarter we will report on a handful of articles we have selected as worthy of note. These may vary widely, from breakthrough findings in the basic science lab to clinical trials or even timely reviews of literature. AO Spine Latin America Study Groups recent publications
|
|
|
At the end of 2019, AO Spine Latin America Study Groups were relaunched. These groups were created to promote innovation through scientific investigation. Their objective is to stimulate discussions and brainstorming activities on specific topics in order to develop guidelines and research projects as well as to create a network and a platform to connect spine surgeons in the region. In addition, they are a potential way to involve more young surgeons in research.

Applications for the 2021 Fellowship Program are open
|

From May 1st, 2020 to August 31, 2020 you can apply for a short-term fellowship [1 to 6 months] in one of our 16 spine centers in Latin America and over 80 more around the world. This training is aimed at surgeons with more than one year of experience in spine surgery who wish to improve specific techniques or further their knowledge of spine pathologies. It is required to have been an AO Spine member for at least three years prior to the date of application and to have a specialization in orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery. More information ›
