Education Highlights

AO Regional Courses 2022 Latin America

In its very first edition, Regional Courses were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2022.

The event featured seven courses over a full week, covering five AO clinical divisions. Over 130 of the world’s leading experts in trauma, spine, craniomaxillofacial, veterinary, and reconstructive surgery gathered in Rio to share their knowledge and experience in a dynamic, comprehensive, and interactive event with more than 400 surgeons.

Faculty Development

Our faculty training programs provide the framework for exploring a variety of teaching methods, with emphasis on practical skills, and for guiding participants through the specifics needed to deliver high-impact lectures. They also demonstrate how to lead interactive discussion groups and effectively run practical exercises.
We ended the year with 105 trained and active faculty in the region: 11 in Mexico, 15 in Central America, 17 in Colombia, 17 in Argentina, 8 in Chile, 18 in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, and 19 in Brazil.

Study Club

The AO CMF Study Club is part of AO CMF’s continuing effort to offer more opportunities for its members to get together around craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery and professional development-related topics. This exclusive learning group is a member privilege and provides access to online and face-to-face events, networking activities, private case discussion groups, journals, and other learning materials. This is a reliable and dynamic network where AO CMF surgeons can get together to discuss compelling cases and exchange experiences.
Members may participate in monthly meetings (online or in person) to discuss clinical cases and exchange experiences. Adding a global dimension to the Study Club events, an international AO CMF faculty member attends each session to offer expert insights on several topics and engage in case discussions with local study club members.

Young Ambassadors

This project aims to generate connections among young surgeons in the region in order to support the objectives of AO CMF regarding networking, membership, education, and research. Many young members are enthusiastic about participating in AO CMF activities do not know how to do it. Therefore, this project connects mentors, the country’s most experienced members, to these young surgeons, guiding them towards professional growth within the organization and providing them with opportunities to do volunteer work.
Young ambassador may be requested to support educational activities, talk about their experiences as AO fellows, represent young surgeons in the Regional Board, or be in contact with other young colleagues in their country.
The first step of the process was identifying key talents to join the program.
The requirements were:

Being at the beginning of their career

Actively participating in a local college or start-up research project

Being recommended by a faculty or AO CMF member

Having outstanding qualifications in the fellowship

Having a desire to get involved with AO CMF

Fellowship

The AO CMF Fellowship Program offers a unique educational experience to the most promising young surgeons in the entire field of craniomaxillofacial surgery. With this program, AO CMF provides a gateway to our worldwide network and fosters cross-pollination and networking opportunities across our global community.
Fellows have the opportunity to learn from leading AO CMF experts in renowned, carefully selected centers covering the entire scope of craniomaxillofacial surgical procedures performed around the world. The AO CMF Fellowship Program lasts between 4 and 8 weeks.
